1) THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS?

In August I worked with an incredible group of women to put together an event celebrating South African Women’s Day. It was a challenging, exhausting and deeply rewarding experience. I’ve connected with so many talented and dedicated women in the Durban creative community in the past 12 months and I’m so grateful for the reciprocal creative opportunities that have resulted from those connections.

2) THE WORST THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS?

My Oupa passed away after many years of battling mesothelioma, the weekend of my wedding anniversary. It felt like losing one of the last links to my childhood. Like it cemented my adulthood. Although it wasn’t a surprise, it was still a major blow.

3) YOUR BIGGEST WISH FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?

I’d like to grow in my creative work and continue to use it as a tool for social commentary. Working this year on various projects, events, and exhibitions has been so rewarding. Durban’s creative community is often criticised - but I’ve been so heartened and inspired by the people I’ve met this year and how much passion they have for what they do.

4) YOUR BIGGEST WORRY FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?

Gender-based violence has long been a pressing issue in South Africa and the conversation around it reached a fever pitch this year with the murder and rape of Uyinene Mrwetyana in September. The question on every South African woman’s mind is “am I next?”. I fear that the situation will get worse before it gets better. But I have faith that the louder our voices get, the more people will listen and the more action will be taken.

5) A CONTEMPORARY WOMAN YOU CURRENTLY ADMIRE?

Currently, my creative role model is definitely Karabo Poppy @karabo_poppy (honestly one of the most talented artists in South Africa right now).

6) A ONE-SENTENCE MESSAGE TO OTHER WOMEN?

There is boundless strength in sisterhood.
